In an online statement Monday, Uber announced the creation of Uber AI Labs following its recent acquisition of AI research startup Geometric Intelligence. The new division will be headed by Geometric’s CEO Gary Marcus whose 15 members will form the initial team. Uber AI Labs will develop technology to make driverless cars safer while also keeping Uber in the race to create a driverless future. “Uber is in the business of using technology to move people and things in the real world. With all of its complexity and uncertainty, negotiating the real world is a high-order intelligence problem… It extends to teaching a self-driven machine to safely and autonomously navigate the world, whether a car on the roads or an aircraft through busy airspace or new types of robotic devices,” wrote Jeff Holden in an online statement.
